Area-Contact Haptic Simulation

چکیده
This paper presents the haptic interaction method when the interaction occurs at several points simultaneously. In many virtual training systems that interact with a virtual object, the haptic interface is modeled as a point. However, in the real world, the portion interacting with real material is not a point but rather multiple points, i.e., an area. In this paper, we address an areabased haptic rendering technique that enables the user to distinguish hard regions from softer ones by providing the distributed reflected force and the sensation of rotation at the boundary. We have used a shape retaining chain linked model that is suitable for real-time applications in order to develop a fast area-based volume haptic rendering method for volumetric objects. We experimented with homogeneous and non-homogeneous virtual objects consisting of 421,875 (75x75x75) volume elements.

Real-time Rigid Body Simulation for Haptic Interactions Based on Contact Volume of Polygonal Objects
This paper proposes a new method for real-time rigid body simulations for haptic interactions based on a penalty method regarding contact volume. Analytical methods for calculation of contact forces require too much time to maintain fast update rates for haptic controls. In addition, they prohibit direct connection of haptic interfaces. Penalty methods, which employ spring-damper models for cal...
متن کاملReal-time area-based haptic rendering and the augmented tactile display device for a palpation simulator
Although people usually contact a surface with some area rather than a point, most haptic devices allow a user to interact with a virtual object at one point at a time and likewise most haptic rendering algorithms deal with such situations only. In a palpation procedure, medical doctors push and rub the organ’s surface, and are provided the sensation of distributed pressure and contact force (r...
متن کاملAccurate and adaptive contact modeling for multi-rate multi-point haptic rendering of static and deformable environments
Common approaches for the haptic rendering of complex scenarios employ multi-rate simulation schemes. Here, the collision queries or the simulation of a complex deformable object are often performed asynchronously at a lower frequency, while some kind of intermediate contact representation is used to simulate interactions at the haptic rate. However, this can produce artifacts in the haptic ren...
متن کاملuHaptic Robot-Assisted Surgery Substantially Improves Contact Area for Structural Bone Allograft Reconstructions
INTRODUCTION: Allograft reconstruction after resection of primary bone sarcomas has a non-union rate of approximately 20%. Achieving a wide surface area of contact between host and allograft bone is one of the most important factors to help reduce the non-union rate. We developed a novel technique of haptic robot-assisted surgery to reconstruct bone defects left after primary bone sarcoma resec...
متن کاملA Multi-Threaded Approach for Deformable/Rigid Contacts with Haptic Feedback
This paper presents a physically based method to deal with haptic feedback of manipulated deformable virtual objects in contact with rigid or deformable environment. The haptic rendering algorithm is based on the Signorini’s formulation of the contact as proposed in theoretical mechanics. Since haptic interaction requires high refresh rates, a multi-threaded methodology, sharing configuration v...
